On 24th Oct. 1999, I was born in Dongguan in Shenzhen City, Guangzhou Province. It was an incredibly HUGE factory, and before I ever grew up
to be smart enough to realize what was going on, me and many twin brothers and sisters were sent over first onto a noisy click-clack train then into a gorgeous and spacious truck, finally we ended up in a big, 5 floored bookstore in downtown area, Beijing.

We were placed onto a high shelf, where was really comfy, and I was lucky enough to stay on the top of the shelf, standing for the very high end radio product in the entire country; life was easy by then, I was enjoying the overview of my floor everyday, just make sure I was lying there in good shape, no need to work at all.

It was early in year 2000, in a quiet afternoon, you know, not so many customers, a college girl rushed to our shelf, claiming that she’d like to have me. “Oops”, I thought, “are you kidding me? You got to bring me out of this comfy place and make me work, before my ‘honey season’ was over? “Oh no, the saleswoman was smiling her professional smile and answered, “Of course, young lady. Please pay for it over there in the corner at the cashier and come back for it. Thank you. ”

The girl left for the corner that she was pointing at, and our lovely “step-mother”, the saleswoman, well people called her Ms. Yang, no big difference to me now. She took me down from our high shelf, got rid of the dust on my carton box, and awaited till the college girl got back with a receipt in her hand. They checked me for over ten min. just to make sure I was in good healthy. Then my lovely “step-mother” told her some details about after sales services, she mentioned my real mom’s name, but all I can remember now was Tec something. Gee, not so easy to remember all details when I’m 7 years old now.

The girl took me out of the bookstore and right after she got out of the building, she turned me on. Wow, the sunshine was so bright that it was a little bit pungent for me. Anyway, all I can recall now, is that she locked her tune at FM91.5, and turned me off again. “Hmm, not bad”, I thought, “at least not an inhumane master. “

It was nighttime when we got back to her college, and all her classmates noticed she got newly got me. Then I learned her name was Maple. Right after dinner she rushed into an empty classroom, carrying me in her schoolbag. By 9:00 pm sharp, I was yawning already, suddenly, as if she was expecting something fairly important, she turned me on, and all I heard was a bilingual greeting, “Ni How are you! … Thanks for being part of our Joy FM family...” Oh my, this is it, my very first working day. Master Maple put on her earphones and began to do her homework, listening to this mysterious Joy FM. She looked so happy, just like me was enjoying my honey season, oh poor me, had to begin to work since that young, I knew clearly that I had to work hard to persuade her that I did deserve her bucks.

By 11:00 pm, with “always look for joy in life.” The program ended, and Master Maple finished her homework as well, who knows if she finished or not, all that I knew was she packed up everything and tucked me. Oh my, been a long day for me. Then I heard myself snore, at my new place, on the Master Maple’s bed, right beside the wall.

Early in the morning, say, 7:00 am, Master would get up, and turn and on, oh she’s an early bird, I assure you. Sometimes she’d tune in BBC, sometimes VOA, CRI for morning news, but one thing for sure, she’s stay with Joy FM every single night. Rick’s always been there, from Words and Music to “Da Jia Wan An, Zai Jian.” I think he’s a cute guy.

Such routine life lasted for another two years, and Master graduated from university. She’s been busy with this and that, sometimes she was hunting for a nice job, sometimes she was seeking for a high degree, but no matter what she was up to, each night she’d listen to Joy FM. Rick’s become my old friend now, I think both Master and me are taking it for granted to tune in 91.5 at 9:00 pm. Yeah, I’m loving it.

Each weekend would be Master’s Radio Day; she’d tune in 91.5 all day long, so since the second she woke up till the min. she left for her dreamland, I was working all the time, together.

We enjoyed HitFM (Mike D and another cool guy, I’d turn allergic as soon as I hear them talking, ‘coz both of them were talking as if shooting out all their bullets from their months, ouch! That was impressively FAST! Master enjoyed it so much that sometimes she’d try to talk faster than them, but mostly she was merely as fast as them, otherwise I believe she’d have the opportunity to work for CRI).

Easy Afternoon (hmm, not sure about the name of the program now, all I remember now is that there sms code was KQ, ‘coz the DJs’ names happened to be Kieth and Li Qian, thus they became the Honored King and Queen in the listeners’ kingdom. Master was still a poor student by then, many times I could tell she’d love to send in a hi or dedicate a song for … me? Probably. But she could not afford a mobile yet. Something I found ironic is when she could really afford a very nice Nokia Mobile, Kieth left CRI already, no more chance to talk to the King any more. C’est la vie. Thanks Li Qian is still working there, even nowadays, each weekend, Master would tune in her Easy Weekend while she’s doing some tiding, cleaning and washing. She’d smile to Li Qian’s jokes and sing along some songs that she knows.)

Easy Morning (Oh I wonder where Paul had left for and what he’s up to now. Master used to enjoy the entire morning show on weekend when she was on campus, Paul sometimes play songs that Master dedicated for herself or some classmates who were celebrating their birthday. I still remember Paul’s last show on CRI. Last song he was playing was CAN’T STOP LOVING YOU by Phil Collins, Master got some water in her eyes; later on I learned it was called tears. Why do people like these nice and kind DJs have to leave us? Was it my fault? Why can’t we stay all the same all the time? Hmm, maybe there IS some reason.)

Love Hour was Tina’s show, and she would play some romantic songs, giving advice to couples. Tina always says, “A problem aired is a problem shared.” Her advice did help lots of couples. She left CRI like a happy angel, into her very own marriage and honeymoon right after her contract was done. Master and I were so happy for Tina.

Additionally, that was where I learned the difference between me and Master, I mean there’s something called LOVE between people, but we machines never got such romance and such roses, all we knew and always know is to serve, function and work properly. Otherwise we might be thrown into trash. Life sucks, huh? I assume this is the golden rule of the whole world, either work and survive or break down and be recycled.

… Sorry I went too far, where was I? … Let’s see… Oh I remember now.

Next we had Mr. Yang Chen’s Netfm right after Love Hour by 8:00pm. This genius always got some well-written writings shared on air. Those Chinese writings were merely about daily life, but as soon as Mr. Yang read them along the smooth background music; stories about daily life would shine up and turn into completely different works! Master calls this Literature. From the story of two hedgehogs to winter in Northern China, I could tell all these words are from the bottom of the writers’ hearts. Master was so busy that she never knew when exactly Mr. Yang left CRI.

When Master was working as an English editor, each noon after lunch, she’d rush back into her office, just to tune in Easy Café on computer. Think about it, I was in the face of losing my job! I hate that silly heavy laptop, which Master always takes back home with her. Due to its existence, Master seldom went t bed before 3 am.

Alison was the host of Easy Café when we tuned in. She’s a terrific lazy, she’s not only humorous but also diligent; she was one of the foreign DJs that learnt Chinese that fast. Each show, she’d say “Wo Shi Ni Men De Fu Wu Yuan, Wo Shi Xiao Fang. ” you ever heard that? Yes? Right, she was just so very cute. Sometimes she’d share news or knowledge on air; sometimes she’d ask listeners some questions and they’d discuss about certain questions.
She left for Washington when some better chance came to her. She promised when she got back to Beijing, she’d be meeting up with all listeners at parties, so far, no news about her or from her yet…. No news is good news? I hope so.

Master and I just got used to Joy FM, as if this is part of our life, in summer of year 2005, Master attended a meeting, which decided to change the timetable for the show. It was changed to 8:00pm to 10:00pm, no more 911. Yuan Yuan’s voice is so attractive that thousands of times I was trying to imagine how she looks like. Master was lucky enough to see Yuan Yuan and Rick at an event!

Last night, Master was cooking while enjoying Joy FM, both Master and Me were astonished to learn that Rick was leaving CRI, we just could not believe our ears! It must be my mistake, oh you never know how much I hope it was my fault and Rick would stay. However, tonight, we confirmed this news again when Rick was announcing he’d leave CRI. Maybe he has his good reasons; well, I do believe that everything happens for some reason. Although I hope Rick can stay with me forever, I know I have to respect my dear friend’s decision.

In someway, Joy FM has been the bridge for Master, leading her to a bright and warm world of a Joy FM
Family, well to expand this world, they set up a great BBS on CRI website, Master logs into the BBS and got to know many friends there, from JASS to Sinba, from Grandpa, to EJ, she enjoyed talking to them on line so much that her world was enriched by the great and evergreen friendship in Joy FM
Family, I’m so happy for Master, so that she won’t find the winter nights long and lonely any more.

Sometimes, Master got to email in Joy FM
as well, asking for a song or something like that, Rick was kind enough to answer her questions now and then. When Master is not so busy at work, she sometimes just talk to friends from forums, and they’d be discussing problems such as art, music, health, diet, environment, pollution, travel, oh my, it’s so great to see my Master smiles every day. She used to get stressed out due to lots n lots of work loads and too much pressure in PD Dept.

Anyway, what I’m trying to say is, Joy FM
is not merely a simple radio program that I play every night, it is a rare radio program with more than 10 years’ history, it is a special radio program supported by all other media, such as email system, bbs, hotline and message mail box for listeners as well; it is a respectable radio program with DJs of wide prestige in both professional and listeners’ worlds, from Rick to Jade, from Yuan Yuan to… the coming new program, Pulse, if I caught it right when they were referring to it last two nights, as a radio, I have perfect and numerous reasons to have faith in CRI… as intending to say Joy FM, but since Joy FM will give her last show tonight, I’m afraid I’ll have to change it into CRI.

I know I’ll miss my old friend, Rick, so far so good, 7 years’ friendship, sometimes I lie here wondering if Rick ever got to know me, will he miss me after his leaving CRI? What will he be busy with each day? Enjoying life? Look for joy? Yeah, maybe, just like what he says every day, always look for joy in life. I believe he will follow his words. All I wish now is he’ll enjoy life after this big change.

As for CHANGE, this word reminds me of a song by Tracy Chapman, in her latest album, and Master put this song in her MSN space as the greeting song, I think Rick one mentioned about this song, not sure. Well, I’m trying to make the point that we got to face this and that change in our life, and we never know what each change got to lead us to. How many changes do I, as a radio have chance to face and experience? How many changes can I really accept and adjust to, how many changes can’t I make? How many changes are negative? How many changes are positive? I never know.

All I do know is, like Master always tells me, we got to face all that is going on in our life. We can’t really control what will happen in our life, but we do have to choice to enjoy our life, like I enjoy each Joy FM show each night. I never know which song Rick gonna play next, but each time when a note comes, me n my dear Master sway to the melody. We shall enjoy life like how we enjoy all our favorite songs.

Of course, music is such a mysterious magic that exists in this world, sometimes I got some elements I dislike as well, such as R&B, I never know what they are singing about, some Rock n Roll music is no good for my stereos as I’m getting old now. Think about it, 7 years for a radio like me, thanks that Master got rechargeable batteries for me, so that I don’t feel guilt for running out of power again, I still remember that Rick once said that he was happy to see that people begin to tune in radio programs on their CD players, so that no more pollution caused by batteries. Although I agree, I worry about my own job, what if one day Master favors her new stereo so much that one day she threw me into a dirty pungent trash? So far, as I know my dear Master, she’s a kind-hearted lady, and quite unlikely to abandon me. Lucky me! J

Okay, dear DJ Rick, your last show on CRI, as a radio, I hereby, on behalf of my Master, Master Maple, your loyal listener, we hope you enjoy every second in life. Hope some day we meet up somewhere, just like the guest you were talking to on the show last night, on the Wang Fu Jing Walking shopping street. Finger crossed for this!

No matter what you will be up to, please remember that we do cherish you and we will always remember you as one of the best DJs who worked for CRI and light up our days with all notes you selected.

No matter how far you explore, please remember you are always on our mind. We love you as a close friend; we miss you as a good guide in both life and world of music; we hope to meet you again when we have the chance.

Take care, dear Rick Lee, last night my dear Master was chatting with EJ, saying she’d like to email you before you leave CRI, but she got no clue where to start, she obviously got trillions of words to share with you. In result, she asked me to draft this tedious and wordy letter to you, in some way it’s my life story as well, I can see I’m retiring very soon as well. Master’s got new stereo that could both play radio and CDs, new ipod, new mp3, she’s getting more and more busy now, seldom has time to check out any other programs. I begin to worry about her health, but I’m sure she can take care of herself, then she can take well care of me after my retirement. Hehe~~~J

Oh my Master is summoning me now, got to report about the draft to her, which kept me staying up till 4 in the morning and this afternoon, here now, I’m wrapping up my letter to you, hope she can email you.

I do want to check back with you guys from time to time...feels like catching up and staying in touch with friends...Hope you all are fine...I saw the last email from miyaxxl...must have been a surprise looking for the program and not finding it! I know the feeling...I remember DJs leaving some cities I have lived in...DJs that I used to enjoy listening to...

Anyway...Spring has arrived and I am spending more time outdoors...and skating through streets and hutongs has been a pleasure lately...enjoy the weather...

Grammy nominees CD album provides some of the best music of 2007

PEOPLE are always asking me which CD’s I listen to the most. Lately? Grammy Nominees 2007. I listen to it even more after the Grammys. No doubt, it is a sampling of some of the best of the past year.

I saw the Grammys on TV and it was not exciting until Christina Aguilera came out and sang a tribute to James Brown [the soulful singer who died recently]. She was amazing! She stole the show! She’s on the CD with one from her Back to Basics album which has her stretching back to some older style. They say Christina may play China as part of her current tour. She is “A-list”[top people in entertainment] and I would be first in line for those tickets.
Gnarls Barkley is on the CD with Crazy, Justin’s Sexyback, Corrine Bailey Rae’s Put your Records On, and The Black Eyed Peas with My Humps.
We have had fewer concerts lately in Beijing as the stadiums are being upgraded for the Olympics but we will get a surprise every now and then. We stood up, sang and shouted during the entire Black Eyed Peas concerts in Beijing and Shanghai last year.
But, back to the Grammys Nominees 2007 CD. This album is just packed with some of the best music, including the Dixie Chicks who were awarded five Grammys. After a rough period with many radio stations not playing their music in response to some personal views expressed in concert, their new album confirms they have not “sold out”. The did not stop writing, recording and touring. They did not stop their musical mission. The Dixie Chicks are bold talented women.

Music made us friends

Recently, I was doing a voice recording in a studio. The recording session went smoothly and after we finished, one of the clients asked me if I could do him a favor? His wife was in the hospital and he wondered if I could pay her a visit. She had been going through treatment for some time and she could be there for a while longer.
He thought my visit would be a good surprise for her since they used to listen to a nightly radio program I co-hosted when they were English majors at university. “sure, let’s go, NOW!”
It took quite a while to get there as the hospital was in the southern part of the city. We finally arrived and went to the room that she shared with two other patients. I kind of expected her to be lying down and weak, but instead, she was alert and lively as she sat on the bed. She told me how they (she and her former boyfriend, now husband) would listen to the music program together.
And then we spoke about all kinds of things. She has a very nice voice and they dialed a company that uses her on their phone message. It sounded so professional! She has a laptop and MP3/radio to keep her connected to the outside world while she recovers. She speaks Chinese, French and English fluently, and the music she likes to listen to is varied.
Eight o’clock came too soon, but hospital visiting time was over for the day. I said we could easily stay in e-touch. I am hoping for the best for her and will return soon.
Afterwards, I began thinking about it. I thought of how brave she has been going through this illness. How her supportive husband seized the chance to ask me to visit her. But to tell you the truth, I think I was moved more by the visit than she was: So glad to meet both of them – now we’re friends, Actually, we have been invisible friends for years. Made possible by a music program on the radio.
So, let’s appreciate the “treasures” in our lives, and our musical connections.

I WENT to LUSH last week, in Wudaokou, near Peking, Beijing Language and Culture, and Tsinghua universities. I particularly like small clubs in university areas because of the vibrant music there. And it is much more intimate than a large club.
A friend told me that the band ZIYO would be playing that night. That gave me a good reason to drop by because I have known lead singer Helen since we worked together in radio a few years ago. In fact, she is now heard weekends on HIT-FM in Beijing.
Anyway, after she left radio, for a while she began hosting CCTV-9’s Center Stage where I see her sometimes. Poised and natural, Helen gives us a “proper” introduction to performances in China with a bit of “CCTV smile”. She wears it nicely and it’s always a pleasure to see her.
But then, there’s Helen’s other side. You must catch her fronting the band ZIYO! The small club was crowded and most were standing when ZIYO came out to play. If you think she is going to be that sweet TV presenter, you are wrong.
Helen loosen up 100 percent and goes through different styles, from screeching rock to a very heartfelt Alone and lots of musical flavors in between.
She sings in English and Chinese and they had no problem playing to the crowd which kept moving closer as the music continued. It’s an indie sound, yet unique.

You know, most of us go through the week listening to lots of recorded music on MP3s, some radio and other sources. But to me, after all that listening, nothing sounds as fresh and powerful as a live club performance.
Concerts are good, but too many performers duplicate what you can hear on their recordings.
There is an energy in smaller clubs that makes you feel as though you are not just watching and listening. You actually become a part of the musical atmosphere. Loveit!
Support local music and get out to some clubs, Oh, and let me know which ones you recommend.

THANKS Jenny! An Asian-American singer, Paul Kim, was a recent contestant on American Idol. He had an outstandingly smooth R&B voice and reminded me of Alex To(Du Dewewi) in looks and voice.

I was surprised that he didn’t make it further. He was very good! He said that he did not want to “diss”(disrespect) former American Idol candicate William Hung, who sang “She Bangs” a few years ago in a laughable way. He said he was trying to show another side of Asian performers.
Did he succeed? Paul said, “I’m not trying to get political or anything, it’s just that we’re stereotyped a certain way in the media – where people think all Asian guys wear glasses and are un-athletic and nerdy – that really bothered me.
“William Hung was shown over and over, and at first I thought it was funny, but then it got to the point where it started getting embarrassing. That really irked me, and I was out to prove that ‘s not what we look, it’s not who we are as a whole. So I just wanted to bring something new, and hopefully I did that.”
He did! I am always wondering who will be the first Chinese with the international image of a hot pop singer. Any guesses? Let me know if you think it’s…

Let me tell you about one of my favorite concerts

I WAS in Hong Kong(HK) last week where I was invited to co-host the 21st Century Lenovo Cup National English Speaking Competition. This was special for me because I am a HK resident. It was like returning home. I worked in radio and TV there for more than a decade before moving Beijing.
I made a point of visiting the Avenue of the Stars along Victoria Harbor on April 1. It was an anniversary, the very day when actor-singer Leslie Cheung(Zhang Guorong) took his own life four years ago.
I knew Leslie from TVB where we would occasionally run into each other, and I remember him being very friendly and warm.
Walking along Victoria Harbor from Star Ferry, I approached Leslie’s star on the footbtidge where many of his fans were laying flowers on the ground. You could see a certain sadness in people’s faces. He was an extraordinary talent and a great loss.

Then I walked over to Anita Mui’s(Mei Yanfang) star, which is close to her good friend Leslie’s. I used to go to her concerts often – sometimes two days in a row! She gave “real ” concerts.
Anita would sing and dance for two hours in stunning costume and then she would return in jeans for the encore, speaking to the audience and singing requests for another hour. It is still hard to believe that she is gone.

I used to play a lot of Hong Kong music on my radio programs and I’m still a big fan of it: for example, singer like Alan Tam(Tan Yonglin), Jackie Cheung(Zhang Xueyou) and Priscilla Chan(Chen Huixian).
In fact, Sandy Lam(Lin Yilian) was a colleague of mine at Commercial Radio. I did my show in a studio separated by a large window next to the one in which she made her programs.
Sandy’s on-air name was “lok yat yat (611)” and after her DJ period she became one of the most successful singers in China, with albums in Mandarin, Cantonese, English and even Japanese.

I’ve lived in Shanghai and Beijing since 1996, but find I still have a deep affection for Cantonese music. If you are like me and miss this music, I can introduce you a great Internet radio station where you can hear some of the best Hong Kong music from the past 30 years. It’s www.hkvpradio.com.

hello,i bought a magazine yesterday,i saw an article about Easyfm's host felix and yuzhou,and they arevery cute in the picture.I also bought a newspaper which i can see the special column off the record,what does it mean in Chinese?

I just got the answer from Rick. Share with you...
1) "Off the Record" means some information passed along which is not official. Its unofficial, like speaking to your friends

2) It could also mean music that comes off of a "record"...those discs that played music before CDs were invented.
