wiseguy, you are right...that picture was taken by me with my own camera...ying feng and i worked on joy fm for 2 years in shanghai in a dimly lit studio. i still remember that broken cheap light in the background that you can see hanging by a wire!. after that, the program production moved to beijing...haha...good memories of joyful times!

Judy..you went to that studio or someplace else to see Ying Feng? If it was 1996 or 1997 I was still in Shanghai! Many people have asked, "what happened to Joy FM?"...all I can say is that it was a CRI program...and all questions about that should be directed to CRI...but I remain in Beijing...and I can be reached through my website: www.nihaoareyou.net in case anyone wants an update on me or wants to contact me...take care...Rick

During the period, I had ever sent two snail mails to U2. And I got two reply with photos. I had another one with your signatures. Share with all later!

I still think that you and YF are the best partners of JOY FM! I have a idea for long time. There'll be a party for all joy DJs with audience. It should be a joy family party!

Actually, I was totally happy with all of the women I shared the studio and program with...each brought something special to Joy FM...and all are still someof the most talented broadcasters in China!! Your idea of a JOY FM reunion would be a dream party I am sure...It is fun to imagine what that party would be like! There are many people I'd like to meet at that party! Christmas Music in China
I was sitting in a well known coffee shop today, sipping on a mocha latte, and just enjoying the Christmas music that was playing. It’s a great music season. The music really has no cultural borders. As you go around cities in China, you will see displays of Santa Claus and hear the music in many places. I love it!
Here are some of my favorites. Most are downloadable and some are in CD stores around China. I start off with “Do They Know It’s Christmas” by Band Aid, a song for Ethiopian famine relief. It’s still one of China’s most requested songs on the radio this time of year. And there’s “Merry Christmas, Darling” from the Carpenters. Karen’s voice was as pure as a fresh snowfall. Josh Groban has the number one album on Billboard this week with “Noel.” His perfect voice is made for Christmas. And Mannheim Steamrollers “Christmas Song” is in the top 20. Perfect instrumental music for the season…

Christina Aguilera has an excellent Christmas album from a few years ago. I love her version of “Merry Christmas Baby” which features Dr John. And Mariah Carey’s Christmas album includes “Miss You Most at Christmas Time” and “All I Want for Christmas is You.”

A rare outstanding song is “Peace On Earth” from Bing Crosby and David Bowie. Another Bing Crosby song is one of the most popular songs ever, “White Christmas.”
Boney M, who I saw perform at the Hard Rock in Beijing, have a Christmas album which I never get tired of.
“A Very Special Christmas” is a CD that should be in your collection. It includes Bruce Springsteen’s “Merry Christmas Baby,” Madonna’s “Santa Baby,” Whitney Houston’s “Do You Hear What I Hear?” and one of my favorites, The Pretenders version of “Have Yourself a Very Merry Christmas.” “A Very Special Christmas, Vol 2” is also excellent.

And the proceeds of these excellent Christmas albums go to The Special Olympics!
Christmas is not just for the religious. It is for those who can appreciate the special sounds of the season. December would not be the same without Christmas music. It’s music that brings a special feeling shared by people around the world, whether you celebrate Christmas or not. It goes way beyond Santa Claus and Christmas trees!

hi Rick,

Just returned Beijing from Humen Town, Dongguan City. It's very cold there, about 6 C. But there is no heating system in Guangdong. Although I lived in a 5-start hotel, it's almost the same temperature with outside. hehe, it's lucky that I come back.

I saw the sunrise in NIHAOAREYOU.NET, but can't leave message for the photo hides the text area maybe. I like it and will try to catch one today!

A New Year’s song to remember

AS I wrote in my last column, there are so many, in fact hundreds of Christmas songs. When it comes to New Year, however, very few come to mind.

But there is one that stands out. There’s a song from Dan Fogelberg, Same Old Lang Syne, that I listen to everyday year at this time. It tells of a man’s thoughts after a chance meeting with an old girlfriend during the holidays.
Fogelberg recounts the meeting as if he was like talking to a friend on Christmas Eve. And remembered, not all Christmas Eves are like the ones you see in the movie:

Met my old lover in the grocery store
The snow was falling Christmas Eve
I stole behind her in the frozen foods
And I touched her on the sleeve
She didn’t recognize the face at first
But then her eyes flew open wide
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried…

The old flames wanted to find a place to share a drink but there was nowhere open. The ended up drinking beer in his car and catching up on old times…

She said she’d married her an architect
Who kept her warm and safe and dry
She would have liked to say she loved the man
But she didn’t like to lie…

He tells her he is a singer who has been fairly successful. But his life is not all it appears:

She said she saw me in the record stores
And that I must be doing well
I said the audience was heavenly
But the travelling was hell…
We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to time
Reliving in our eloquence
Another ‘auld lang syne’…

I love how he paints a picture with his words. When you hear the music and his voice you feel how it all comes together.
However, listening to the song this year is a bittersweet experience. That’s because Dan Folgelberg passed away a few weeks ago. He touched so many people with his music. Another love song, called Longer, many people play at their weddings.
His music is his legacy and he will be much missed. I myself will always smile a thankful smile everytime I hear Same Old Lang Syne.

DAN Fogelberg (1951-2007) was an American singer songwriter, whose music was inspired by sources as diverse as folk, pop, classical, jazz, and blues music. Flobelberg’s music was powerful in its simplicity. He didn’t rely on the volume of his voice to convey his emotions; instead , they came through in the soft, tender delivery and his touching lyrics. Songs like Same Old Lang Syne became classics not only because his performance, but also for their engaging storylines.

Thanks Wiseguy!...I did eat the sweet dumplings...and heard so many fireworks outside my home in the centre of Beijing! Weather is warmer these days...and soon I'll be putting on my rollerblades and skate around Beijing...

Sounds like Mary J’s doing just fine

LET’s start 2008 with Billboard’s first No.1 album of the year, Growing Pains by Mary J Blige. This woman has gone through a lot and her fans have followed her life story through her music.

We could feel her frustration in songs like No More Drama. For Mary J, the philosophy “no pain, no gain!” certainly holds true.

Known as the “Queen of Hip Hop Soul”, Mary J had a bad dependency to drugs and alcohol that nearly destroyed her life as well as career.

Now she sings about better times and carries us there with her. This album is easy to listen to and her fans will be glad to catch up with a revitalized Mary J. You can’t always dwell on the tough times.

So how is she doing? The single Just Fine answers that.

“So I like what I see when I’m looking at me
When I’m walking past the mirror…”

But Mary is still going through a learning process. It’s not over yet, and she lets us know that. I like the duet with Usher on her latest single, Shake Down.

“If love is the crime, I’m down for it.
If love is the crime
Let love be the judge”

Mary’s voice is as clear and soulful as in her past albums. What I like about her is that you can sense she’s not just singing the lyrics, she is feeling them! Take this line from Smoke:

“Holding on isn’t healthy
But it’s killin’ me
To let go”

Mary has had to work for the positive part of her personal experience. On Work That she tells us that we need to look at ourselves:

“I’m talking ‘bout things that I know
Work what you got, it’s okay to show yourself some love.”

If you have seen her on TV recently, you will know she’s looking good and has more confidence about the direction of her life. Her new album is deservedly at the top of the charts.
