China gets to ready to Salsa

IN the past few years, there’s been a Latin dance invasion of China. The interest has grown steadily throughout China and between August 8-12 it will get even bigger. Get ready for the 2007 CCTV Annual International China Salsa Congress in Beijing.

Salsa is not just a dance. It’s a passion. It’s a social event. And it’s sexy. Over the past few years, many Salsa clubs have sprung up in Beijing, Shanghai and other Chinese cities. Many people go to these clubs to dance, while other just like to go and get caught up in the music and atmosphere.

This will be much more than just watching a show on TV with Salsa dancing. There will be professional Salsa dancers from around the world coming to Beijing. There will be pre-congress dance parties and workshops where you will be able to learn salsa dancing from beginning or sharpen your advanced skills by dancing with some of the best in the world.

There will be live Salsa bands and parties associated with this Salsa championship. I attended one of those parties in San Francisco a few years ago and got totally caught up in the frenzy of the music that night!

The name “Salsa” comes from New York, but not the dance. Salsa is a derivation of many Latin dances, but Cuba is credited with being the birthplace. Salsa is an evolving dance so there is not one set way to do it.

Each dancer will add their own personal touch to it and pass that along to their dance partners. Even the music goes through changes, but it is primarily a mixture of Spanish guitars and African influenced drums.

If you have never experienced Salsa, go to one of the clubs and find out more about it And check our the TV coverage on CCTV which will be hard to miss. This will be quite an event and another example of China’s connection to the world of music and dance.

Avril Lavigne in Shanghai

Hong Kong on the 17th and 18th. She has a lot of fans in China and I am sure attendance will be high for these concerts. Born in the province of Ontario, Canada, Avril is only 22 years old and she’s already sold over 26 million albums! She has more number one singles this decade than anyone, 5! She’s hot!
According to reports, she was first discovered singing country songs at a bookstore in Canada. Her first album was “Let Go” and it contained “Complicated” and “Sk8er Boi.” Being an inline street skater, I can relate to that song!

Avril brings a street sense to her music. And she is a busy woman! She also acts and models and got married a year ago to Sum 41’s guitarist and lead singer Deryck Whibley.

Her latest album came out earlier this year, “The Best Damn Thing” and it debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. “When You’re Gone” was recently released.

“It was actually kind of hard. I was looking for really great players, like pros. I wanted them to look cool and be cool. I have to be blown away and I just don't settle, you know. I was looking for everyone in the band to have phenomenal background vocals.So you have to be really good. The guitar player had to be really good and he had to have great vocals, so when we do acoustic stuff, he could sing with me and we could sound good together with the harmonies.”

Mamma Mia

I have been hearing about Mamma Mia for months now, and it is finally in Beijing. I have friends who couldn’t be more excited! After a successful run in Shanghai, it is now in Beijing and will end soon. Will I go? I can’t see how I can resist!
I mean, I have been on the radio for years and during that time I have played all those ABBA hits featured in the musical, so there is that familiarity factor. Yet, I find it hard to get into musicals. I am one of those guys who will say, “I don’t like musicals, BUT… I did like Chicago and Moulin Rouge…” So perhaps Mamma Mia will fall into that category for me. And like many guys, it’s not our choice! We are influenced by the women we date and want to please. So when she says, “Can we puleeeze go see that ABBA musical?” you sometimes just have to give in to the request!

The story seems solid enough. A daughter about to get married in Greece wants to know who her father is. But the real appeal for me is all of that ABBA music. Bringing it to life in a different form is creative and refreshing. 22 songs that you may not even know that you know, but when you hear them, you find yourself singing along to music that may be a forgotten part of the soundtrack of your life! After 7 years, Mamma Mia is one of the most successful productions currently playing on this planet, and the reason is, millions of people love it!
ABBA Gold was an essential part of my personal CD library for radio. Dancing Queen, Happy New Year, Waterloo, Mamma Mia, Knowing Me Knowing You…I actually do like their music and appreciate the impact it has had on my life, and many people’s lives. And that’s what music is all about. Something that lasts more than a few months on the charts. ABBA’s music goes back to the 70’s, before many in the audience were born. But really, the birthdate of music means little to me.
The longevity means much much more. And ABBA’s music has that!

So, will I go? Looks like it. It’s the appeal of a musical that celebrates music that people love and can relate to. We should consider ourselves lucky that Mamma Mia has come to China!

It was raining heavily the other day and I needed to go out and do some things on the other side of Beijing. It had been a while since rain like this, so I looked around the apartment. “Where did I put that umbrella-ella-ella?” I asked myself. And as I looked around for it, I realized that “umbrella-ella-ella” would not leave my head.

Rihanna’s latest song, “Umbrella,” from “Good Girl Gone Bad” has stayed at the top of the many charts around the world most of this summer. It’s still in the top 5 of the Billboard charts after 4 months. “Umbrella-ella-ella!” What a hook! You can’t miss it.
I can appreciate a good “hook,” the part of the song that catches you, the part you can’t stop singing. The hook helps the song stand out in a sea of often nondescript music.
Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty in Barbados, Rihanna caught our attention a few years ago with the international hit “Pon de Replay.” Now she has reached superstar status, and she’s only 19!
And I admit that I am a male who can appreciate an attractive woman. She is hot! It is a world where music has gone beyond just the audio presentation and she fits the screen so well!

Every time I see Rihanna on TV, I stop what I am doing and pay attention. I love her looks and moves on stage. And so do a lot of other people!
Jay-Z adds his vocals to “Umbrella” although there seem to be a few mixes where you don’t hear him at all. In fact, in the mix without him, nothing is really lost. Song just sounds a little cleaner.

Chocolate Rain-Tay Zonday

Last week I wrote about the infectious “Umbrella” from Rihanna.
It’s only fitting that the other hot song of the past summer is “Chocolate Rain” from Tay Zonday.
What? You haven’t heard this one yet on the radio? You must check this out! This is my favorite kind of smash hit. Not a record company’s radio hit. Not a Billboard hit. It’s my favorite kind- an internet hit! I like music that gets around the radio playlists and goes straight to the people! And that’s what this is. It is a hit on its own merit and appeal. It is so strange… I love it!
“Chocolate Rain…”
Tay Zonday has a very unusual deep voice. He is 25 years old and from Minnesota. He sings “chocolate rain” 57 times in the four minute song. And he’s got one of the most popular songs on the net! About 3 million hits! And it is free!

Google it! You’ll find it easily on a few sites, including YouTube. In fact, I highly recommend that you watch this guy. Watch his breathing pattern as he turns away from the microphone when he takes a breath so that you won’t hear the inhalation. He sometimes sings out of the side of his mouth. And then there is that voice! Is it real? As you watch him you will not expect his deep voice. (And by the way, it is real and very unique!)

Is this a good song?
You decide! It is not what you will expect when you see the video. That voice does not fit his body. He’s got weird movements that make me watch harder. I have to really listen to get the lyrics, yet I can’t stop singing the hook, “Chocolate Rain!”
And what makes this different than a lot of other songs released this year?
The video has a lot to do with it. And internet buzz. In fact, I should warn you before you search for it online. This song will catch you and you will not get it out of your head!

My past week was packed with adventure! I flew to Kenya to join a safari and photograph wild animals like elephants, lions, zebras, and giraffes. I am always sensitive to sound, and I found myself paying attention to this environment which is so different to Beijing.The river water rushing right past my room with hippos and crocodiles moving upstream. The clear nights with moonshine and monkeys swinging in the trees. It was beautiful to disconnect from the city sounds.
We visited one village of 180 Masai people. No electricity. Their clothes were colorful and as African as you might expect. Children playfully tossed animal droppings at each other like snowballs in the middle of the circular center area. My ears caught the sound of African music; the kind with drums and traditional African instruments that you would expect. But then, in this in this very native setting, I could hear Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” from a battery operated radio followed by songs like Sean Kingston’s number one single “Beautiful Girls” and Nickelback’s latest, “Rockstar!” I was so surprised that this remote village was tuned into the music that we know so well!
We traveled to other parts of Kenya to see animals like rhinos and cheetahs. Our jeep usually stopped to rest at places which sold African handicrafts and as I looked around the wood carvings of tribal warriors and animals, I noticed a very familiar sound. I asked a salesman what they were listening to and he said it was China Radio International from Beijing. I mentioned that I had made weekend programs for Nairobi for a year. He hesitated for a few seconds, and then looked me in the eyes and asked, “Are you Rick?” I was shocked! He recognized my voice and told me how they used to pay attention to my weekend programs and then he called 5 of his colleagues over to meet me! They smiled and thanked me for the pop tunes I would introduce them to as well as the Chinese music that was a part of my programs. My voice had been in Africa a year before I had actually physically visited. They called me the “Ambassador of Music from China.” I had no idea I was actually a little part of Africa, and music was the connection…

Pink- Who Knew

The only thing I know for sure about life, is that you never know for sure! There are people who come into your life for an undetermined amount of time, and you must cherish that time because you never know how long it will last! We take too many people for granted. Friends who we think will last more than a brief time in our lives.

When I first heard Pink’s “Who Knew” from her album, “I Am Not Dead,” it made me think of people from my past. Friends who I thought would be around for a long time. People come into our lives to teach us something; to add something to our lives; to help us get more out of our lives. We forget what a limited time that can be.

Life in China seems so transient sometimes. In fact, I have stayed in China longer than many of the friends I have made over the years! When I arrived years ago, I thought I would live here for a while and move on. I came to China because I was offered a radio program and I thought it would be a good chance to experience something different than Hong Kong. Little did I know I’d be in Beijing for more than 10 years…so far!
There are people who have meant a lot to me who have left China. Or left my life.
So when hearing Pink’s “Who Knew,” I am reminded that we must focus on the present, and the people we know now, because we never know what the future will be…

Britney Spears- Gimme More (for Sept 19, 2007)

We may not get the full MTV in China, yet I am sure you have seen a few pictures or the video of Britney’s performance on the MTV Video Music Awards last week. She sang, or rather lip-synched a new song called “Gimme More” and it seems the world is still talking about it. She looked terrible, out of shape, wore a 2 piece outfit that accentuated her extra weight, and didn’t really sing. She did get the world talking about her, but not in a positive way. Everybody seems to be dissing Britney!
First of all, we know she is still around after two kids, a marriage that fell apart and erratic behavior that includes shaving her head (and other areas!) Secondly, we know that she is going downhill. It was not a triumphant return.

There is a celebrity adage that goes, “it does not matter what they say about you, as long as they talk about you!” Well, people are talking about what a mess she is! Apparently, Britney chose her own clothes and did her own hair. She looks heavier, moved in an awkward sluggish way and looked like she was just rehearsing the song for the first time. MTV must have chosen her for the curiosity of her appearance and audience boosting for the program.

Kanye West said he will never support MTV again because his song “Stronger” should have opened the show. He said MTV was responsible for her performing even though they knew she was not ready to face millions of viewers! People are talking about her for sure, but not as she would wish. Now she will have to work on a comeback of her “comeback!”
Is she finished? Can she overcome the bad press she has been receiving? Will her new album be successful or will she be ignored? If she gets help she could turn this around. People are still paying attention to her. But she will have to take a break for a while, get into incredible shape, and convince us that she actually wants to be back!
If she asked me, I would remind her of this: People would love to see her return as a slightly matured confident creative performer. They don’t want to see what went down last week! And whatever you do, Britney, do NOT seek advice from Michael Jackson!!!

Jazz

I spent a few nights at the MIDI jazz festival in Beijing last weekend and it was just excellent! There is something romantic about a cool clear moonlit autumn night, thousands of music fans, and live jazz. Jazz has always been popular with a niche crowd, yet the more mainstream jazz becomes, the larger the potential audience. I can appreciate more traditional jazz, but I am also a fan of modern fusion jazz with creative elements added to the mix. And I like the kinds of people jazz attracts. A little more open; a little more in tune with music other than radio pop. And a little more adventurous!
Last year I received a surprise call one day from a friend of mine who was visiting Shanghai for a few days, and he happens to be one of the most respected and talented bass players in the world. Nathan East was a guest on pianist Bob James’ jazz album called “Angels of Shanghai” recorded at the Shanghai Peoples Radio Station studios. He had flown in to add his talents to the album. Nathan plays bass for people like Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, and has worked with many of the top talents in music (Google him!)
In fact, Nate has a very successful jazz group called “Fourplay” and Bob James is part of that group. “Angels of Shanghai” was recently released in China and I had to pick it up. Nate plays bass on a few tracks and sings on “Endless Time.” Bob James took his friends from the West and combined them with music from China and came out with a very cool album. I love these kinds of collaboration, and jazz is a great ground to combine music styles. The melding of cultures is a reflection of life itself as China gets closer to the rest of the world. It’s the real fusion of life and music!

“Angels of Shanghai” is a very good smooth jazz album. Typically Bob James with elements of China mixed in like pipa and erhu. It works, and I can listen to this album over and over and it is in my iPod. It is comfortable jazz and easy to get into. I am impressed!
Shanghai will hold a jazz festival early October called the JZ Festival. Give it a try if you are in the area. Jazz is cool, man!

I was shocked when I found out today that JOY FM is gone. When I was listening to the last program from CRI's website, I just couldn't help crying.

I started to listen to JOY about 10 years ago, when I was still a college student in Wuhan. One of the local radio stations somehow got that program, and I just loved it. Since then, I listened to the program on and off. Even if I came to the US, I still listened to it from time to time. The last time I listened to it was in February this year when I was busy preparing for my final dissertation.

Now that I've got my Phd, I've got a new job, and I've settled down in a new city, I could finally sit down at my desk and enjoy Joy FM. But it's GONE!!! How sad I am! I feel like that my youth is gone!

From a happy girl in college to a working mom now, I enjoyed the program a lot. I even played it to my son when he is still a fetus in my body. I know in the future, when he grows up, what I'll tell him is: always look for the joy in life! That's the attitude we gotta take!

No matter how things change, JOY FM will always be in my heart. Thanks for the joy brought by you, Rick, and by other hosts, Ying Feng, Wang Lu, and Yuan Yuan. Also thanks for the effort by wiseguy! You guys made me feel our joy family is everywhere.

Luby, Came across your words as I was checking out this web site this morning...I do check out this thread often...thanks for your thoughts! Seems as if we do have to deal with changes in life...and sometimes there is nothing we can do about some of those changes...It is not possible to continue Joy FM anymore because the program was stopped by CRI. As you, Judy, Wiseguy and others have mentioned, if you carry the message of "always look for the joy in life" then I guess the program was what was intended all along. Something more than just another radio program. A program that still shares a family feeling no matter what. We are glad that you, and yes, your son are still part of the JOY family that will remain in our hearts. Thanks for your support, and wish you and yours all the JOY in life! Rick
