I support singers who perform in China

I’VE always tried to be supportive of international singers who make the effort to perform in China. Macy Gray stopped by last year and sang with Karen Mok (Mo Wenwei) at the Shanghai Formula One Grand Prix. Then she spent some time as tourist in Beijing.

It’s been a few years since Macy released an album and I’m a fan of her distinctive raspy voice. She laughs when she explains the title by saying, “I chose ‘Big’ as the album title because of my big heart and big butt!”

The album is fresh and accessible and Macy gets help from will.i.am and Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas, Nas, Justin Timberlake and Natalie Cole.

I am not disappointed. It sounds fresh and updated compared to her last album. I hope Macy can make it back here and do an actual full concert for us.

And while we’re on the subject of new albums from people who have been here, Grammy award winner Norah Jones performed in China a few years ago. I remember that cool night vividly, and, once in side Workers Stadium in Beijing, the warmth projected by Norah playing to a full house made me feel almost like I was in a music coffee house. It was a very intimate performance and a pleasure to see her live.

So, I’ve had been looking forward to her new album which came out recently and shot to No 1 on the Billboard charts.

This does not necessarily mean it’s an outstanding album; it simply means many people were anxious for any new Norah Jones album.

The album Not Too Late is very much more of what we like about Norah. Nothing to really grab our attention but a comfortable sound.

It doesn’t seem to matter very much what she sings about. Could be singing about war or love, the sound is pretty much the same. It’s style overtaking substance and that is not always bad.

In fact, I’m listening to Norah Jones as I write this column right now. Her sultry voice is like cream in a cup of coffee. She’s a special talent and if Norah came back to China, I’d go see her again.

Go for the variety and enjoy the atmosphere

I LOVE music festival! All kinds! I am a music fanatic and working in radio gave me a great excuse to follow my live music passion. And there are so many kinds of music festivals around world!
Some feature local bands, giving them a chance to play for thousands of fans. Some festivals are defined by a certain kind of music, like rock or country.

I usually don’t go to these festivals to see any favorite bands. I go for the variety, for the new bands, and to hang out with friends and enjoy the music!

Outdoor music festivals are different from indoor concerts. I’ve been to jazz festivals, folk festivals, salsa and reggae festivals. I enjoy the free spirit, the ability to wander around, the energy, and the atmosphere of fresh music!

And I always get surprise at these festivals. Once, when I was living in Florida, I attended a country music festival. I didn’t like country music at all in those days and thought I would be there for only an hour or so. Guess what? I ended up staying the whole two days and found there were many more types of country music than what I’d heard on the radio. Some featured lightning-fast string playing on instruments like guitar and fiddle. It was a great surprise and much more fun than I ever expected.

Not all cities in the US or the rest of the world have music festivals. So when there is one, it becomes an “event” that attracts musicians and fans alike. And of course, festivals in university areas tend to be cheaper and more accessible to students.

Hawaii was the last place I lived in the US before coming to China. The hospitable spirit runs high throughout the islands and people try to help each other. I learned a lot about Hawaiian music from those festivals.
Hawaii is also the home of one of the best natural concert settings in the world. Some promoters have recently re-started the rock festivals held in the crater of Diamond Head, the famous non-active volcano in Honolulu, Hawaii. Imagine performing in a crater! Who wouldn’t want to?

People overseas often talk about China’s rock and alternative music scene and I think it’s cool that the world outside gets to learn that China does have modern music festivals. The Midi is the place to experience some of the best China has to offer, for only 50 yuan a day! Music connects us all … Hope to see you there!

Internet radio just got a lot easier

I WAS visiting some friends over the week-long holiday. While hanging out in their apartment I heard some good music coming from another room that sounded like a British radio station.

It was a very good station and my friends told me it was Internet radio, but it was on their desktop computer which is located in another room so they had to play it at a louder volume. I told them about a new kind of radio I have read about that makes listening to Internet radio much easier – Wi-Fi radio.

The concept is simple. It looks like a regular radio except that it connects to the Internet without a computer. So instead of tuning into AM or FM, you can tune into broadcasts from around the world via the Internet.
Why do you need an expensive computer just to listen to Internet radio?

I like to listen to radio in the morning but I don’t like to take my computer into the bathroom while I’m shaving and showering. Water and computers do not mix!

It’s so much easier to find online the kind of music I like from around the world: Stations devoted to a particular kind of music. If I feel like jazz, I can find it. Heavy metal, Brazilian, African, French, classical and so on.

With regular radio on FM, you never know what will be played. The element of surprise is always there, which can be good or bad. If you are a music fanatic like I am, it’s great to have an accessible variety available.
Let’s say you fell like hearing streaming hours of rap right now. You can find it on the Internet, but good luck finding it on FM radio right now.

“Narrowcasting” gives me control over what I want to hear 24 hours a day, instead of waiting for hours for a DJ to play something I really want to hear.

Let’s hope this great new kind of radio with thousands of stations will be available in China soon.
The first Wi-Fi radio I’ve read about is made in the UK by Acoustic Energy. Other companies are starting to make Wi-Fi radios and, as we know, if it becomes popular the price should go down. Especially if they’re made in China. Exciting possibilities! Let me know if you see one before I do.

Musicians like to eat veggie

I AM not strict vegetarian but I do tend to lean in that direction since I have friends who are.

I recently had a delicious healthy dinner with a few of them and the conversation turned to vegetarian singers. While the various dishes were passed around, we all mentioned the names of singers we knew who were vegetarians. Andre 3000 of Outcast, Carrie Underwood, Chris Martin of Coldplay, Sinead O’Connor, Shania Twain, Paul McCartney…

And Prince! In an online poll conducted by animal rights group PETA, he was voted “The World’s Sexiest Vegetarian”. Prince will not eat “anything with parents” and this guy seems to have more creativity and energy than most performers his age. In fact, he seems ageless.

Joss Stone’s latest album is called “introducing Joss Stone”. Actually, it could be called “RE-introducing Joss Stone”. The 3rd album from this soulful British singer – and vegetarian – is no disappointment.

She used to sound like a much older singer, yet she was only a teenager when she made her first few albums. Now she is growing up and into that mature soul sound she was born with.

She was born a vegetarian, and says, “There are so many other things we can eat. I have never eaten meat in my life, and I’m 5-foot-10 and not exactly wasting away!”

She adds, “Animals are my friends, and I’m not in the habit of eating my friends. That is exactly how I feel.”

Joss is growing up and into her vocals. I caught her on TV the other night with her new dark red hair and she displays a maturity that still belies her age of 20. On her new album, she has added more rhythm to her blues and this will make her more accessible to the mainstream audience.
There is harmony among vegetables and musicians.

1) "Off the Record" means some information passed along which is not official. Its unofficial, like speaking to your friends

2) It could also mean music that comes off of a "record"...those discs that played music before CDs were invented.

Love those websites with music

I HEAR about new music in various ways. Sometimes I’ll read about an artist in a column just like this one and then, if I’m lucky, I’ll find their album in Beijing.

Such was the case with Amy Winehouse and her new album Back to Black. Amy’s from the UK, 24, very cool and unusual. She’s been described as a mix of jazz, soul and pop, and I’d say that’s pretty accurate.

She’s also known for her alcohol consumption including, occasionally, onstage. Yet, she is being praised by all kinds of performers like American hiphop singer Jay Z, who says he loves her new album.

“I’m so grateful to be doing what I’m doing,” Amy says. About her new album, she says: “I’m just so proud of it. I think the record speaks louder than any of my stupid actions or things that I say!”

I saw Amy perform Rehab on TV recently, and she will catch your attention. With the heaviest eye makeup I have ever seen, she is not a classic beauty, but you can’t take your eyes off her. Or your ears.

She’s a recently British Female Solo Artist “Brit” award winner and you will be hearing a lot more about her. She’s on the edge. You can read about her album at: www.amyhouse.co.uk.

Last year an American teacher taught us to “open up your dream” like the song sung by Supergirl Jane Zhang(Zhang Liangying). He was a big fan of Jane and told us how he had gone after his dream and traveled to France when he was younger. He said it was one of the best times of his life and he found that it was possible to achieve more than you can imagine if you have the courage to follow your heart. Since then, when I meet some difficulties, I remind myself to overcome them and keep following my dreams.

Well, Valery, I’m glad that lyrics inspired you to keep reaching higher. I like Jane Zhang and remember sending a few SMSs for her during that singing contest. I’m a big fan of shows like Supergirl and American Idol. I watch them faithfully and as the contest gets closer to the finish, you can watch the contestants rising to levels the never imagined.

Bjork-“Volta”

February 1996. I had flown into Beijing from Shanghai, where I was living at the time, to interview and see the performance of Iceland’s Bjork. Some people find it difficult to accept Bjork’s music. Her sound is an acquired taste, but once you get into her music, you’re hooked! After the packed press conference, I was led to a room where we did a one on one interview for radio. I was surprised how intelligent and pleasant she was. And fun!
The performance at the Worker’s Stadium was incredible. Barefoot for most of the show, she captured the audience with her music and her spirit. Her encore was an acoustic version of “It’s Oh So Quiet.” Very classy, very cool.

The next day I was invited to go to The Great Wall with a lot of reporters who were to take pictures of Bjork. She was with her son and did not seem to be in the mood for the photographers. She stood and stared at the ground, not facing the cameras. Then suddenly, she darted to the exit, out to her waiting bus, and sped back to Beijing! It was strange to see as she had been so cooperative with the press a few days before. After Beijing, she went on to perform in Hong Kong and then Thailand. In a story that went around the world, she jumped on and attacked a female reporter at the Bangkok airport who only said, “Welcome to Thailand!”
You may have seen her on the Academy Awards a few years ago when she appeared in that outrageous swan outfit. Or perhaps her performance of “Oceania” at the opening ceremony of the 2004 Greece Olympics. Bjork does demand attention!
Well, she’s released a new album, “Volta.” I had to buy it just to see what she’s up to. She challenges us to enter her own world with every album, and this one is no exception. Working with a variety of producers, including Timbaland, she takes us into her music again with an artistic flair. It is not easy to digest, but if you can appreciate her eccentric endeavors, you will have a lot to get into. She may not gain any new fans with this album, but if you are a fan already, then you have a new Bjork album to explore.

- from “The Sound of Silence,” and after all these years, whenever I hear that song, it triggers a series of vivid images from the movie “The Graduate” with the unforgettable music of Simon and Garfunkel interwoven throughout.
I was speaking with some students who will graduate soon, and I was surprised to learn that so many in China have seen the movie “The Graduate.” Though made in 1968, so much of that movie still rings true. Like graduating with so many friends and then going home alone to ponder the future. Getting advice from just about everyone and questions about your plans...
“Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you.”
I’ve seen The Graduate many times over the years. It never ceases to draw me in as Ben struggles with life after graduation. His uncomfortable time at home with his family. His attraction to Elaine, and her mother!

God bless you please, Mrs. Robinson
Heaven holds a place for those who pray, hey hey hey…”
Who can forget the scenes as Mrs. Robinson seduces Ben and confuses him even more as he falls for the comforts she offers? “Would you like me to seduce you?” Mrs. Robinson suggestively asks Ben. And how she forbids him from seeing Elaine again…

May, she will stay
Resting in my arms again”
Benjamin, realizing that he is in love with Elaine and pursuing that love. And becoming her hero, rescuing her from a fate she did not really want…

So, here’s to all the graduates who will feel some confusion in the “real world” ahead. It’s a natural part of it. Trust in the future. Try to enjoy the journey ahead…

What’s Old is New Again

The Police have reunited and it could be the most successful tour of 2007. They just started playing in North America and tickets are selling fast. Of course, some of you may think of it as “Sting and those other guys he used to play with” as he became the solo star who parted from the Police in the mid-eighties. Why would they get back together to perform only Police music? For the money? Well, Sting doesn’t need any more money. He’s financially set for life. So, why spend a year on the road touring and playing hits from 25 years ago?

Well, the money is good, for sure, but perhaps he misses those days of the Police, just as we do! We don’t care if there’s any new music from the Police. That’s not why we’d go see them. We want to hear them play the music that we know and love. Songs that still touch us. “Roxanne,” “Every Breath You Take,” “Message in a Bottle,” etc

The Eagles, Foreigner, Genesis with Phil Collins, Van Halen with David Lee Roth, Wet Wet Wet, Crowded House, Blondie, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, and even The Spice Girls…some of the bands who have reunited to bring their music to an audience that remembers and misses them!

About a year ago, I saw Deep Purple perform in Beijing’s Worker Stadium. I couldn’t care less about some of the new music that they played. It was just filler music. But, when they played “Smoke on the Water,” we stood up and air guitared the beginning we all know perfectly! That’s why we were there!
For sure, part of the appeal of a band reuniting is the money they can make if they go on tour. It’s a chance to re-live old memories with older fans, and even get some younger new fans. I enjoy new music. Always have. But I can appreciate music from the past which is still a part of our lives!

I wonder which groups you’d like to see reunite? Which bands do you miss the most?

I’m glad to see that some performers can get past the reasons for breaking up to get together again and recreate some of the magic that attracted us in the first place!

Satellite Radio

I was hanging out recently with a few friends who were visiting China for the first time from the US. They were talking about a new kind of radio that exists in other parts of the world but not yet in China. Satellite radio, and its outstanding! These guys said that they never listen to FM anymore because satellite is so much better! In the past few years millions have purchased special radios that only receive satellite radio stations. Satellite radio has been going on for about a decade, but only in the past few years has it started to get more and more popular.

Here’s what it is. A satellite in the sky can reach a whole country. That satellite can beam more than a hundred channels at the same time. XM Radio has about 150 channels. That includes about 80 music channels. About 10 different kinds of rock channels, 5 jazz channels, 4 classical, pop music by the decade from the 1930’s to today, country channels, folk, trance, hip-hop, rap and many more. Also talk stations, comedy, news, sports etc.

Their only competitor is Sirius Radio. And they offer the same amount of channels and similar variety! The beauty of satellite radio is that the channels are all narrowcast, not broadcast. So whenever I want all new alternative rock, I turn to that channel. When I get tired of that, I can move on to all the other channels.

It’s truly modern radio! I can hear whatever kind of music I want 24 hours a day. My MP3 player can only play music I already know. I get tired of that.

There’s one main difference between FM radio and satellite. It’s not free! The cost is a special radio, and a monthly subscription fee of about 100 rmb. But since it is much better than FM, millions of subscribers have already found it a small price to pay for all that audio pleasure. And most of the channels are commercial free!

Having been in the radio business many years, I do know about it. India has satellite radio but it is pretty much just beginning. And it is being tested in other countries.

Hopefully sometime in the future China will have a satellite radio offering. There are a lot of current FM radio listeners who would be thrilled to try it!

Live Earth-Concerts for a Climate in Crisis

It will be a 24 hour event on July 7, 2007 or “07-07-’07.” Of course, the next world event with numbers like that will be “08-08-08!”
New York, London, Hamburg, Shanghai, Tokyo, Rio De Janeiro, Johannesburg, Istanbul, and Sydney. All connected for you to watch in the comfort of your home or wherever you are on this planet!

Among the performers in Shanghai at the Oriental Pearl Tower will be Sarah Brightman, Eason Chan, Winnie Shin, Evonne Hsu, Huang Xiao Ming, Anthony Wong, Joey Yung, and 12 Girls Band. …

I am not sure which, if any, TV stations will carry the concert in China. Probably some radio stations but I want to see it! I’m going to watch it on the internet which could be the best way. They’ve developed new technology to enable you to see the various performers in different places. You’ll be able to choose which locations you want to see. If you saw any of the Live 8 concert in 2005 on the net, you will remember how cool it was to click between the different stages.

I love events like this! To bring awareness to a special cause. This concert is to send the message that we can do something about our planet’s condition! Think about it. This could be the largest concert on Earth! And they ask no money from you. Just the attention to the movement to save the planet.

事件：红灯停，绿灯行，“美国哪吒”往北行（just kidding, hope you wouldn't get angry）
At that time, I was on the bus, the other side of the road, so I cann't see your face clearly!

If it were you, maybe next time you can drop by my university, I'll treat you at "北京吃饭大学"！

yes...that was me on my skates that day...I am still in Beijing and getting outside for exercise on my skates...I was on my way that day to the new Olympic stadium...wish I could skate in the Olympics!!! Say hello next time you see me if you can!!
